Every day, people meet strangers online to buy a used car, find a roommate, go on a first date, or hire a freelancer. Most of these interactions go fine. But enough of them don't that the question "can I trust this person?" has become one of the most important questions you can ask before connecting with anyone new.

Trust verification is the answer to that question — and it's simpler than most people think.

What Is Trust Verification?

Trust verification is the process of confirming that a person is who they claim to be before you meet them, transact with them, or share personal information with them. It goes beyond a gut feeling or a quick profile check. Real trust verification establishes that a specific email address, phone number, or identity belongs to a real, accountable person.

Think of it as the online equivalent of asking someone for ID before letting them into your home.

A verified person has taken steps to prove their identity — confirming their email, verifying their phone number, or completing additional identity checks. When you search someone on a trust verification platform and find their verified profile, you know two things: they are a real person, and they have put their name behind their online presence.

Why Trust Verification Matters

The internet makes it easy to be anonymous. That anonymity is useful for privacy — but it also enables fraud, scams, and misrepresentation at a scale that wasn't possible before.

Consider some of the most common situations where trust verification matters:

Buying and selling online. Marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and OfferUp connect millions of buyers and sellers every day. Most are legitimate. But scammers use the same platforms, hiding behind fake profiles and throwaway phone numbers. A verified seller has confirmed their contact information — if something goes wrong, they're accountable.

Online dating. Catfishing — creating a fake identity to deceive someone romantically — is widespread. A trust verification check before a first meeting takes less than a minute and tells you whether the person you've been talking to has a verified identity attached to their contact information.

Finding roommates. Signing a lease with someone is a serious commitment. A trust verification search on a potential roommate's email or phone gives you a baseline of confidence before you hand over keys or add someone to a lease agreement.

Hiring freelancers and gig workers. Whether you're hiring a handyman, a tutor, or a pet sitter, you're letting someone into your life or home. Verified profiles give service providers a way to demonstrate credibility — and give clients a way to check it.

Any situation involving a stranger. The common thread in all of these is simple: you're being asked to trust someone you don't know. Trust verification gives that trust a foundation beyond hope.

How Trust Verification Works

A trust verification platform like VerifyTrust works in two directions simultaneously: people can verify themselves, and anyone can search to check whether someone is verified.

Getting verified typically involves confirming your email address, verifying your phone number via SMS, and optionally completing additional steps like address verification or linking social media profiles. Each completed step increases your trust score and makes your profile more credible to anyone who searches you.

Searching someone is even simpler. Enter their email address or phone number. The platform checks whether that contact information is associated with a verified profile. Results appear instantly — no signup required to search.

The more verification steps a person has completed, the higher their trust score. A profile with verified email, phone, and location is significantly more credible than one with email alone — and a person with no profile at all is an unknown quantity worth approaching carefully.

What Trust Verification Is Not

Trust verification is not a background check. It does not search criminal records, credit history, or court filings. It confirms identity — that the person is real and accountable — rather than auditing their history.

It is also not a guarantee. A verified person could still behave badly. What verification does is raise the cost of deception: scammers and fraudsters rely on anonymity, and a platform that requires real contact information makes it significantly harder to operate under a false identity.

Think of trust verification as the first layer of due diligence — necessary but not sufficient on its own. Use it alongside your own judgment, public reviews, and common-sense precautions.

How to Use VerifyTrust

VerifyTrust is a free trust verification platform built for everyday online interactions. Here's how to use it:

To search someone: Enter their email address or phone number in the search bar on the homepage. Results are instant and free — no account required.

To get verified yourself: Create a free account and complete your verification steps. Start with email and phone verification (both free), and add location verification for a higher trust score. Share your VerifyTrust profile link with anyone you're connecting with online so they can see your verified status before you meet.

To build your reputation: Collect reviews from people you've transacted or connected with. Over time, your VerifyTrust profile becomes a portable trust record you can share in any marketplace, dating app, or professional context.

The Bottom Line

Trust verification is not about suspicion. It is about being a responsible participant in the online world — both protecting yourself and being someone others can confidently trust.

Searching someone before you meet costs nothing and takes seconds. Getting verified yourself takes minutes and pays dividends in every online interaction that follows.

The question is no longer whether you can trust someone. The question is whether you've taken the simple steps to find out.

The person who sent it to me called me and explained that he made a terrible mistake and he is in urgent need of this money. He requested me to return it immediately. Although I asked him to wait for a couple of minutes so I could verify my bank statement and confirm that I am not getting scammed. The transaction was legit so I returned the money. But what is the first thing you should do in such situations?
[EU] Hotel availability... scam?

Hi all! I work for a pretty small hotel, I used to work in-person, but we're closed right now so I'm managing emails. We receive a lot of spam and scams (so many people wanna work on our damn website, apparently), but there's one I really don't understand. Sometimes I'll get emails that look pretty normal, asking for room availability or the services we offer and such, and while you can definitely look everything up by yourself on any website we're on, I have to respond. A standard email is like "warm regards, please check if rooms are available from this date to this date, also do you have a pool, awaiting your feedback". They're also always in weirdly robotic sounding english, like it's not written wrong or anything, it's just that nobody talks like that. When I hit reply the email address changes, leading me to believe it's a spoofed email, but like... why? What type of scam is this? There's no links you can accidentally click or anything. I haven't been responding when I see the email address change but my coworker did and we never got a response from them leading us further into a scam or anything so what even is the point? Just sending junk to your email and making you waste your time responding? Does anyone have any explanation because I'm just curious about the strategy here lol submitted by /u/limejuuice [link] [comments]

Research article analyzing Reddit discussion about scams

TL;DR: We wrote an article about Reddit discussion about scams, including on r/Scams . Read it for free here: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3719027.3765030. Hi everyone! I’m Elijah Bouma-Sims, a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University. My research focuses on understanding why people fall victim to online scams and exploring ways to prevent such crimes. I am writing to share a recent article I wrote, focused on Reddit discussion about scams. This paper analyzes about 1,500 posts from four Reddit communities where people discuss scams. Most of the posts came from r/Scams. Our goals were to understand the types of scams people discuss, the types of support people seek, and the types of advice people receive in response. From the analysis, we found that Reddit plays a meaningful role in scam prevention and remediation. Community members help posters identify scams and offer advice to recent victims, including emotional support and guidance. We also observed patterns in the types of scams people report, as well as how scammers sometimes attempt to target posters directly. We further discuss how moderators and community members work to prevent revictimization. Of particular relevance to r/Scams is that we found posters were more likely to be shamed or chastised compared to those on r/Sextortion. This issue should not be overstated, as these comments represented a small minority of contributions (and are basically inevitable on the internet). Still, I believe it is worth noting. If you're interested in reading more, the paper is available here for free: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3719027.3765030. I apologize that this is fairly dense and academic, but I hope these findings are helpful to moderators and community members. submitted by /u/ElijahBoumaSims [link] [comments]

** Moderator Approved Study ** My name is Rachel Fletcher, and I am a PhD researcher at the University of Huddersfield. I am conducting a confidential survey to better understand people’s experiences of sextortion - a growing form of online blackmail where someone threatens to share sexual images or videos unless demands are met. Whether or not you’ve personally experienced sextortion, your responses can help researchers understand how these scams operate and how to better support victims. What’s Involved? • A confidential online survey • If you haven’t experienced sextortion: ~15 minutes • If you have experienced sextortion: ~30–45 minutes • Questions include general background, thoughts/feelings, and (if relevant) details about the experience • You can stop at any time, and you can withdraw your data up to the final debrief page Who Can Take Part? • Anyone 16+ • People from any country can take part, however the survey is only available in English. Confidentiality & Data Protection: • No identifying information is collected. • Data is stored securely by the University of Huddersfield under GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 • Only the research team has access to the data • The study has been ethically approved by the Human and Health Sciences School Research Ethics & Integrity Committee Who Is Running the Study? • Researcher: Rachel Fletcher (PhD candidate, Department of Psychology) • Supervisors: Dr. Calli Tzani & Prof. Maria Ioannou If you have questions, you can contact the research team directly: If you have questions, you can contact the research team directly:

Had an email from Tesco mobile today about two new accounts. Email was addressed to someone else, with a delivery address totally unfamiliar to me in a totally different part of the country. My worry is my email address is very unusual and specific to me. Tesco aren’t any help. submitted by /u/Dangerous_Owl3659 [link] [comments]

Very suspicious SSA email

Got a very suspicious looking email this morning(went straight to spam); viewing the html coding says the address had a @socialavailablestatements.com comopnent, and I spoke with someone at my local SSA office who believes the email isn't legit.... The mail itself claimed I had requested a Social Security statement of some type and had a pdf attached, which I of course didn't touch(again, I only indirectly looked at the email); haven't directly contacted them about anything in literally a decade, so I'm pretty sure this was a scam attempt, but that's certainly a new one on me! Searching the email address across multiple engines found literally zero matches, so I guess someone was getting creative.... Regardless, I made no such request, and simply deleted/blocked the email...anyone see anything similar to this, before? submitted by /u/CapeMike [link] [comments]

Need Urgent Help: Reddit Account hacked and attempts to scam

Hi, So this is my secondary account. My primary account has gotten compromised. Long story short, my personal email was recently hacked (recovered and secured now), and they had gotten access to my reddit (along with multiple other platforms). I've managed to secure everything except reddit. Despite me changing my password, setting 2FA and also logging out all devices, they still somehow have access to my account. They've been messaging multiple people mentioning they are selling certain things. This person had messaged through my own account telling me that they had bought this account off someone else without knowing it was hacked. Idiotic me believed this story and now i realize he is using my account to scam people. He has messaged multiple people but I'm not sure if he is successful in scamming. I have requested reddit support to help but they have not responded after a week. My last resort is to get help from here. I do not know what to do. I do not wish to delete the account. Hopefully theres a way to kick this imposter out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/LepreNx [link] [comments]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7ZAk1jMWoQ Huge “scam compounds” have been built across Myanmar’s border with Thailand under the watch of the country’s reviled military rulers. The gangs responsible target often vulnerable victims with online fraud, with their vast operations using trafficked workers who are beaten and tortured if they refuse to carry out the scams. We have an exclusive report exposing this vicious form of international organised crime that is raking in billions a year from people from across the world, including Britain. Our Foreign Affairs Correspondent Secunder Kermani has been inside one, Shunda Park, which has just been taken over by anti-government forces. A warning, this report contains images of injuries from torture and some mild nudity. This is an excellent news report from a pig butchering scam centre in Myanmar near the border with Thailand, from an area that has been recently taken over by forces who are fighting the military regime and it's allies. This also shows how these large scam centre are able to operate because governments and the police/military junta have allowed it to, likely benefiting financially through bribes. submitted by /u/Gtk-Flash [link] [comments]

So I didn't fall for this scam but I had seen it before, but was kind of scary and wanted to spread awareness and just get people's opinions. Have been looking for a PC upgrade for a while, saw a really cheap nice looking PC on Facebook marketplace (no specifications listed), so decided to reach out. Got their phone number and they asked for my shipping address and name after my saying I'd be interested. Apprehensive about the scam, I gave them my real name (not a great idea) but the address of a family business (my family's dental office), which could receive packages. They then asked me for an advance on the shipping fee while "on their way to FedEx". I got scammed by this before where you send the money and then they don't ship anything. So I just blocked them and reported their Facebook account. They now reached out from a different number, saying "Did you just wasted my time, do you know I've your address and your name, with your cellphone number right here with me and it take me nothing to come down there gun you and your family members down" And then sent me a picture of a gun. I know they are likely just empty threats hoping I'll send them money. But I do have some fear as family members of mine do work at the address I provided and I did give them my real name. I guess anyone else just be careful submitted by /u/SillyYou8433 [link] [comments]

[DE] O2 allowed a Cyprus company to charge 19.99€ to my phone without consent. How is this scam still legal in 2025?

My German mobile provider O2 (Telefónica Germany) allowed a Cyprus-based scam company called CFM (Content For Mobile Ltd.) to charge 19.99€ to my mobile bill using “Bezahlen per Handyrechnung” (direct carrier billing). I NEVER subscribed to anything. No SMS. No confirmation screen. No TAN. No 2FA. No Face ID. No double click. NOTHING. Yet O2 billed me as if I had ordered a monthly subscription called “Abo NBA pro Monat” at 04:51 AM – while I was asleep. Details: • Charge: 19.99€ • Date/time: 26 Nov 2025, 04:51:29 • Company: CFM Ltd., Limassol, Cyprus • Method: Direct Carrier Billing (WAP billing) • Device: iPhone 15 Pro Max (no subscriptions in Apple ID) • O2 displayed it as a “Drittanbieter-Abo” This is NOT a real subscription via Apple, Google or any app store. It’s pure WAP-billing fraud caused by malicious ads or hidden frames, and O2 still allows it. What I have done so far: • filed a formal complaint with O2 • demanded a refund • blocked all third-party billing • contacted the scam company to delete my data (GDPR Art. 17) • filed complaints with the German Bundesnetzagentur • contacted the Verbraucherzentrale • submitted a GDPR complaint to the Cyprus Data Protection Authority How is this still legal in the EU in 2025? Why do mobile operators allow third-party billing without verified consent? Why do consumers need to fight international scams on their own? If anyone had similar experiences, please share your story. submitted by /u/AcanthisittaOpen2952 [link] [comments]

I just got an email from someone with my pastor's actual name. the email goes like this; [Pastor's Name] "Hello, I hope you’re doing well! I’m currently in a long meeting for an upcoming fundraising event and can’t step out at the moment, but I wanted to ask a quick favor if it’s something you’d feel comfortable helping me with. Today is the birthday of a friend’s daughter who recently recovered from a serious illness — it’s a really special day for their family. I’d love to send her a small gift, and I thought of an Amazon or Apple gift card she could use for some games or books. If it’s not too much trouble, could you help me organize the purchase online or suggest the best way to send one digitally or buy a physical card and send a picture of the scratched cards and receipt? Rest assured, I’ll transfer you the amount right as soon as I'm done. No pressure at all — I completely understand if you’re busy. Thank you so much for considering, and I hope your day’s going well! Warm regards, Pastor [my pastor's name]" this email came from pastord[the town we live in]@gmail.com No, the extra d isn't a typo, it just shows how this is fake. The fact that they got my pastor's name and the town correct is scary. Even though I actually fell for it, I am broke, so I wouldn't have sent money anyways. The word 'gift card' should have triggered my 'scammer alert' alarm immediately. submitted by /u/Sammy_Cherry_Fox [link] [comments]

I’m getting spam/scam calls for the someone thats not me. Is this normal?

Hey everyone! So first off, whenever I get a call from an unknown number I usually err on the side of caution and ignore it for security reasons, but I’ve tried to google what’s happening here and I can’t find anyone with a similar experience to mine. I figured I’d ask the community dedicated to it lol. I’ve had the same phone number for almost 10 years now and I keep getting the same call like two or three times a year. The voicemail that’s left is always government or court related and it’s intended for someone called Deborah L (I can never hear the last name properly). The most recent call I received was a local number and they mention the county I’m currently living in, but I’m not Deborah and I’ve never known anybody by that name. Apparently if ‘Deborah’ doesn’t file something further action is going to be taken. I do know that scammers make fake emergencies to get people to act and can use fake numbers to make it look local, but where would they have gotten my county from? Voting records maybe? I’ve never thought too deep into the situation, but I think it’s odd that they’ve been calling for years now with the same schtick every time. Wouldn’t they give up eventually? Or is there a possibility that this is a real person giving out my number? Can two people even have the same number? I wonder if there’s anything I can do to get rid of these calls or if it’s just a block and delete type of thing. I would appreciate any and all input. I’m not super tech savvy, but I know enough to be paranoid about any unknown calls and assume scam. Thank you! submitted by /u/yep6778 [link] [comments]

I genuinely thought for a moment that is legit and my 2 ambulance payments were late and they sent one for collection. Nope, not the case. Be weary, they really good. Full on canadian accent, oh send us an email , oh it's for security and privacy purposes...just give us first three or last three digits, NOW! submitted by /u/No_Addition_1186 [link] [comments]

Even after 13+ days, the product has not been shipped. • No tracking number provided • Support keeps giving the same scripted replies • They admitted the order is “not yet shipped” • No resolution from their team Because of this, I have taken official action: • Filed a National Consumer Helpline complaint Docket No: 8266071 • Collected all emails, WhatsApp messages, order details, and payment proof If anyone else has faced similar issues with Vlebazaar, share your experience so others can be aware.
This company reached out to me on indeed, claiming that they were interested in hiring me for a remote customer service position. On their website, they claim that they outsource customer service workers to other companies. However when it came time to conduct an interview, it was explicitly done through text in an MS Teams chat. I was highly skeptical once they started asking for personal information such as which bank I use, my personal address, email address, cell phone number, which phone carrier I use, along with how my payment structure is set up with my carrier. I did not provide this information. I ran their messages and job description through a gpt detector, and it was confirmed they were using AI to message, and email me. While I can not confidently 100% say this was a scam, it seems that the writing is on the wall to say the least. I just hope to help someone else out there not to fall victim to this potential scam. submitted by /u/Abject_Arugula_7319 [link] [comments]

GM3 Trading Bot Scam – They Drained My Wallet After Connecting to Their Auto-Trade Bot

I want to warn everyone about a scam I just experienced with a project called GM3 Web3 / GM3 Trading Bot. They run a Discord server with around 19,000 members, and they advertise an “auto-trade bot” that supposedly makes trades on your behalf. I connected my trust wallet to this bot via telegram app as a D-app in my trust wallet, which then it withdrew all the money in my account. I then talked to a moderator on the discord server and he said I “cheaped out” by not putting enough money in and that’s why it’s not working overall just being very disrespectful. I asked for a refund and he removed me from the server. Why it’s a scam • The bot requires dangerous wallet permissions. • They lure people in with fake stats and fake testimonials. • The Discord is filled with bots and fake members to look legit. • They intentionally design the system so they can drain wallets once connected. ⸻ Please be warned If you search GM3 Trading Bot, GM3 Web3, or GM3 Auto-Trade Bot, please know: This is a SCAM. They stole my funds and will steal yours. I’m posting this so others don’t lose money like I did. If anyone else has had issues with GM3, feel free to comment — we should get as much information out there as possible so others searching for “GM3 trading bot” can see real experiences. submitted by /u/AdBitter1824 [link] [comments]

They stole my funds and will steal yours.

I’m posting this so others don’t lose money like I did.

If anyone else has had issues with GM3, feel free to comment — we should get as much information out there as possible so others searching for “GM3 trading bot” can see real experiences.

   submitted by /u/AdBitter1824
[link] [comments]

Potential WhatsApp scam? Any advice would be appreciated

Hi everyone I received a message from my nanny today one WhatsApp about an engagement. Very confused I phoned my mum to see if she had been chatting to my nanny. She said no. Then a short time later my nanny messaged again replying to the message she sent me. We gave her a ring and she said she had received the WhatsApp message from me and very confused as why would she be getting engaged. She is adamant she did not send the message and hasn’t spoken to anyone else today that the message could have accidentally been for. For an 80 year old woman she is very tech savvy and health wise is 100% so I do believe her. Could this be a scam? How on earth would someone manage to do that! I will attach a photo of the message. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks submitted by /u/irishg0rl [link] [comments]

How do I stop the calls without changing my number?

As the title suggests. I get upwards to 50+ scam calls a day. All from different numbers. Its always the same scam talking about medicaid and medicare, or unclaimed compensation of benefits of things I DONT HAVE. I have pleaded , begged, cursed, calmly asked them to stop calling me and or remove me from their list but it never ends. Some are nice enough to hang up on my while others riddle off every obscenity in the book into the phone until I hang up. I have a lot of important things ties to my phone number and dont wish to change it. As this progressively gets worse, I fear i may not have another option. These services that require a monthly subscription also feel like a scam. Like paying the mafia to protect me from the mafia. This shit does not make sense. The built in call filters do not stop "known" numbers (anything that has a caller id that isnt "unknown") from coming through. They always call from a masked number. I simply dont answer my phone any more and have had to turn off the vibrate and ringer functions. Does anyone have any recommendation or a solution to this issue? I'm losing my mind because the calls are rendering my phone useless as I constantly am interrupted by these calls. submitted by /u/Mr_No_Face [link] [comments]
